what should art be made of?

Do you recognize this Hollywood star? This is Marilyn Monroe, the famous queen of glamour from the 1950s and 1960s. Her 15 feet tall portrait is painted directly onto the wall. Reflected in her sunglasses are pictures of football players and an eye chart with a popular saying: "Men Seldom Make Passes at Girls Who Wear Glasses."

Products made by machines have interesting surfaces, colors, shapes, and sizes.

Artists in the 1960s liked the clean look of manufactured products. These materials are often found in UNITS. The artists explored the mathematics, repetition, and simplicity of basic shapes.

Heaven and Earth is the title of this art work. Here, two television monitors are "looking" at each other. In the top monitor a videotape plays showing the artist's mother's face during her last moments of life. The lower monitor shows the artist's son just after he was born. The two faces reflect each other.
